BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's golf team will conclude their fall schedule this weekend as the Mountain Hawks host the Lehigh Invitational. The invitational will feature 12 teams for a two-day, 36-hole event, which will be played Saturday and Sunday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Â
Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 7,051 yards from the championship tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.
Â
This weekend's tournament marks the fifth and final event of the fall season. Lehigh has put together a nice fall season highlighted by their fifth place finish out of 18 teams at the Rutgers Invitational. The Mountain Hawks also finished sixth out of 14 at the Colgate Invitational, third out of nine at the Tuxedo Autumn Invitational, and lost a hard-fought battle in the annual President's Cup to archrival Lafayette on October 14.
Â
Junior Harley Abrams led the Mountain Hawks in their last tournament, the Tuxedo Autumn Invitational, finishing third overall. He also led Lehigh at the Rutgers Invitational, while senior Carlos Kim led the Mountain Hawks at Colgate.
Â
Last year, Lehigh closed out its fall season with a strong showing at the Lehigh Invitational. The Mountain Hawks finished second in a seven team field with a score of 313-305-618. Among returning Lehigh players, Kim finished fourth overall last year.
Â
All eight Mountain Hawks on the roster are expected to compete this weekend, with five players serving as Lehigh's scoring team and three competing as individuals.
Â
This year Lehigh will be joined by Binghamton, Bucknell, Fordham, Lafayette, La Salle, Manhattan, Monmouth, Rutgers, Siena, Towson, and Villanova.
Â
The Lehigh Invitational will tee off Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the first 18 holes from the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the final 18 holes beginning at 9:30 a.m. Lehigh will be playing in the first five groups off of hole No. 1 on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks will play with Binghamton and Rutgers.
