BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two teams still searching for their first win of the season meet Saturday at Schoellkopf Field as Lehigh visits Cornell in the final non-league game for both teams. The Mountain Hawks fell to 0-5 for the first time since 1966 after falling to Bucknell 45-24 in their Patriot League opener last Saturday at Goodman Stadium. Lehigh battled back impressively from a 31-7 fourth quarter deficit, coming within seven points of the Bison before a 77-yard touchdown pass put the game away for Bucknell.
Â
Cornell celebrates its homecoming this weekend as Lehigh visits Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red are 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Ivy League following a 24-7 loss to Harvard last weekend in Boston. Cornell forced five Harvard turnovers and kept the game scoreless into the third quarter before the Crimson broke through. The Big Red also have lost road games at Patriot League members Colgate and Bucknell and lost their home opener to Yale on October 4.
Â
The Big Red is averaging just 9.8 points and 217 yards per game offensively. Freshman Jake Jatis has seen the lion's share of time at quarterback, while Luke Hagy (211 yards) leads the ground game. Defensively, sophomore Miles Norris leads the way with 42 tackles and three sacks.
Â
Lehigh scored three touchdowns against Bucknell with two of the three scores coming from freshmen. Troy Pelletier scored on a 19-yard run in the first quarter, while Chris Leigh scored his first career touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Add in Pelletier's three receiving touchdowns this season and freshmen have accounted for five of Lehigh's 20 touchdowns. The five touchdowns are the most scored by a Lehigh freshman class since 2007, when Kwesi Kankam (three), Jaren Walker and Alex Wojdowski accounted for five.
Â
One of the major factors for Lehigh's success over the previous three seasons was its ability to generate big plays on offense. The Mountain Hawks had 28 offensive plays of 30 yards or more in both 2011 and 2012 and had 20 such plays last season. Through five games, Lehigh has generated just nine big plays, with four of the nine coming in the Yale game. On the flip side, Lehigh has been victimized by big plays on the defensive side of the ball. The Mountain Hawks have given up 20 big plays through five games, with those plays covering an average of 50 yards. Lehigh was victimized on touchdown passes of 69, 78 and 77 yards in its loss to Bucknell.
Â
Offensively, Lehigh has performed relatively well this season but the Mountain Hawks have had issues in each of their last two games with Bucknell. The Mountain Hawks rushed for just 96 yards last Saturday, snapping a streak of seven straight games of more than 150 yards rushing. The last time Lehigh failed to reach the century mark was last year at Bucknell, when the Bison limited Lehigh to 85 yards on the ground. In addition, Lehigh quarterbacks have thrown at least one touchdown pass in 18-of-20 games dating back to the 2012 season. The two exceptions are Lehigh's last two meetings with Bucknell.
Â
Lehigh and Cornell have met 25 times with the Big Red leading the series 14-9-2. The two teams last met in 2008 with Cornell winning on the final play of the game. The last meeting in Ithaca was a 38-35 Lehigh win in 2001. This is just the ninth meeting between Lehigh and Cornell in the last 40 years. The Big Red were the opponent for the first game at Goodman Stadium, a 27-14 Lehigh win in 1988.
Â
Game time on Saturday is set for 3 p.m. from Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y. Video for the contest will be available on the subscription-based Ivy League Digital Network. The game will also air on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as ESPNLV.com with pregame coverage beginning at 2 p.m.
Â
Lehigh returns home and returns to Patriot League play next Saturday when nationally-ranked Fordham visits Goodman Stadium on Homecoming and Family Weekend. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m. with tickets available by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by visiting LehighTickets.com.
