BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As he prepares to lead Lehigh into its first NCAA Tournament appearance, senior co-captain Andrew Krentz was tabbed as the Patriot League's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's tennis for the second straight year, it was announced Wednesday. Krentz was also named to the Academic All-Patriot League for the third straight year. He is joined on the Academic All-League team by sophomore Mitchell Petersen.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League teams are voted on by the league's sports information directors, who are not permitted to vote to their student-athletes.
Krentz is a four-year starter and two-year captain for the Mountain Hawks, who captured their first Patriot League title last month and will play at No. 6 Mississippi Friday in the NCAA Tournament. He went 14-7 in singles in 2013, playing primarily at the No. 5 flight, while in doubles he teamed with Ben Gilman to go 16-6 at the No. 3 flight to form the Mountain Hawks' most successful doubles pairing.
Last year, the Glencoe, Ill. native was selected for Lehigh's prestigious Martindale Scholarship, a group of juniors and seniors that actively explore global business and economic issues.
Petersen was a second team All-Patriot League honoree for his on-court performance on Wednesday and was also recognized for his work in the classroom where he carries a 3.46 GPA in Lehigh's College of Business and Economics.
The Grand Rapids, Mich. native tied for the team lead with a 17-4 singles record, playing primarily at the No. 3 flight. Petersen was 5-1 in Patriot League regular season matches and posted nine wins at No. 2 singles and eight at No. 3. He also teamed with junior Mark Goldberg to go 12-8 at No. 1 doubles.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award or the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter of key contributor in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for the honor.
The Mountain Hawks will play their first-ever NCAA Tournament match Friday at 3 p.m. (CT) against No. 6 Ole Miss.
