Gilman named Patriot League Player of the Month

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Ben Gilman played a critical role as the Lehigh men's tennis team captured its first Patriot League Championship last month. The sophomore was named Patriot League Men's Player of the Month for April after going 6-1 in singles play and 5-2 in doubles, highlighted by the doubles point-clinching win and the championship-clinching singles win in the league finals against Navy.

n singles action, Gilman opened the month with a straight set win over Brandon Goldstein of Lafayette at the No. 1 flight and then rolled to wins of five of his next six matches at the No. 2 flight. All six of Gilman's singles wins came in straight sets, and included two wins over Navy's Peter McDonald, the latter of which was a 6-4, 7-5 triumph in the Patriot League final that triggered a Lehigh celebration.
Gilman's lone loss in April was a tight three set match against Kelly Morque of Bucknell in the Patriot League semifinals. He also had the clinching singles win in Lehigh's 4-0 quarterfinal win over Holy Cross.
For the season, Gilman is tied for third on the Mountain Hawks with 15 victories. His 15-7 overall mark included a 5-1 record against league opponents in the Patriot League regular season. Gilman was 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the league at No. 2 singles, and 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the league when moving up to the top flight.
In doubles, Gilman and senior Andrew Krentz continued to be Lehigh's most successful team, with a 5-2 month at the No. 3 flight to close out the month at 16-6 overall. Gilman and Krentz clinched the doubles point in the Patriot League title match with an 8-6 win over Navy's Austin Jones and Alex Gaines.
A first team All-Patriot League selection in 2012, Gilman is Lehigh's first player of the month in men's tennis since Troy List garnered back-to-back awards in February and March of 2011.
Gilman and the Mountain Hawks will make their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance next week in Oxford, Mississippi, when Lehigh squares off against No. 6 Ole Miss, Friday May 10 at 12 p.m. (CDT).
