Lehigh makes six stroke improvement Friday at NCAA Tempe Regional

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Lehigh men's golf team showed improvement on day two of the NCAA Tempe Regional. Four of the five Mountain Hawks bettered their first round scores as Lehigh shot 295 Friday at the ASU Karsten Golf Course. The Mountain Hawks were 15 over par on Friday and remain in 14th place at 36 over par 596 (301-295).
 
Sophomore Carlos Kim was Lehigh's top performer on Friday, shooting one over par 71 to match the low round of the regional for the Brown and White. Lehigh started the day on the back nine, with Kim carding birdies on 11 and 17 to go with four bogies. Kim played even par on holes one through eight and birdied his finishing hole for his 71. He is Lehigh's top individual through 36 holes at four over par 144 (73-71) and is tied for 44th place.
Junior Andrew Arnold had a nice bounce-back effort after opening with an 82 on Thursday as he shot two over par 72 on Friday to sit at 14 over par 154 after two days. Arnold was one under par for his first nine holes including an eagle on the par-5 14th but finished with four bogeys and a birdie on the front nine.
Lehigh's first round leader, freshman Harley Abrams, made three birdies on the front nine, but double bogeys on 18 and 2 left Abrams with a 76. Abrams is tied for 56th place at seven over par 147 (71-76).
Also carding rounds of 76 on Friday were senior Sean Keller and junior Alex DiClemente. Keller birdied two of his first four holes on the day and sits in 70th place at 153 (77-76). DiClemente bounced back from a first round 80 with three birdies and is 74th place at 156 (80-76).
The ninth and 18th holes continued to be problematic for the Mountain Hawks on Friday. On 18 the five Lehigh players produced a bogey, three doubles and a triple. Aside from Kim's birdie on the ninth, the hole produced three bogeys and a quadruple bogey for the Brown and White.
Lehigh sits 18 shots behind 13th place Kennesaw State which is at 288-290-578. UCLA shot seven under 273 to maintain the team lead at 19 under par 541 (268-273). UCF shot the low round of the day, an eight under 552 to move into second place 11 strokes behind the Bruins. Georgia and Texas A&M occupy the third and fourth spots, while Duke and host Arizona State are tied for fifth.
UCF has the top two individuals, with Greg Eason firing a 63 on Friday to take the lead at 12 under par 128 (65-63), six shots better than teammate Ricardo Gouveia. Six players are tied for third place at five under par.
The NCAA Tempe Regional concludes Saturday with the final round beginning at 7 a.m. (PT) from the ASU Karsten Golf Course. The Mountain Hawks will tee off from the tenth hole beginning at 8:50 a.m. (PT). Lehigh's players will be paired with Kennesaw State and the five individuals.
