TEMPE, Ariz. – The Lehigh men's golf team completed its spring season Saturday at the NCAA Tempe Regional on the ASU Karsten Golf Course. Junior Alex DiClemente led the Mountain Hawks on Saturday shooting even par 70, the lowest round of the tournament for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks finished in 14th place in their first NCAA Regional appearance with a final score of 892 (301-295-296).
Lehigh started on the 10th tee Saturday with DiClemente recording pars on his first eight holes before bogeying the 18th. DiClemente rebounded from a double bogey on the second hole to birdie three of his last six holes to card his 70. He tied for 68th place shooting 16 over par 226 (80-76-70).
Also tying for 68th place was junior Andrew Arnold, who bounced back from an opening round 82 with back-to-back rounds of 72 to finish at 226. Arnold was one under par through his first nine holes Saturday and carded a team-best four birdies in the final round.
Sophomore Carlos Kim was Lehigh's top player through the first two rounds, but Kim shot 78 on Saturday to finish in a tie for 59th at 222 (73-71-78).
Freshman Harley Abrams and senior Sean Keller both finished with rounds of 77 on Saturday. Abrams bogeyed four of his final five holes after birdieing the fourth as he finished in 65th place at 14 over par 224 (71-76-77). Keller made three birdies in his final round in the Brown and White to finish in 74th place at 230 (77-76-77).
Top seed UCLA cruised to the regional title finishing at 30 under par 810 (268-273-269). The Bruins finished 17 strokes better than Georgia and UCF who tied for second place. Texas A&M (280-277-272-829) and host Arizona State (284-274-274-832) finished fourth and fifth respectively. The top five teams qualified for the NCAA Championships May 28-June 2 in Atlanta, Ga.
Greg Eason of UCF shot a final round 70 to earn top individual honors at 12 under par 198 (65-63-70). Eason defeated teammate Ricardo Gouveia and UCLA's Jonathan Garrick by four strokes. Dustin Korte of Austin Peay State finished eighth at six under par 204 (64-71-69) and qualified for the NCAA Championship as the low individual not from a top five team.
Lehigh was playing in its first NCAA Regional after the Mountain Hawks won their first Patriot League Championship since 1997 last month at Saucon Valley Country Club. The Mountain Hawks won three tournaments in the 2012-13 school year after previously not winning a tournament since 2009. Lehigh loses just one senior, Keller, to graduation.
