BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team suffered its first doubleheader sweep of the season after falling to Bucknell by scores of 7-2 and 8-1 Sunday at the Goodman Campus. Lehigh drops to fifth in the Patriot League standings, while Bucknell is tied for second with a mark of 7-5. The Bison improved to 12-23 overall and the Mountain Hawks fell to 18-19.

“We got outplayed in all facets of the game today,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “Today was one of the few days we didn't have great execution all around and there weren't a whole lot of bright spots for us.”

A pair of Lehigh errors and a sacrifice fly by Justin Meier off sophomore starter Nick Stephens gave Bucknell a 3-0 lead in the second inning. A three-run fifth inning from the Bison was highlighted by RBI hits from Carter Bumgardner and Joe Ogren.

Junior Tyler Brong turned an unassisted double play on a Travis Clark ground ball that concluded the top of the sixth inning, and Lehigh responded by scoring its only runs of the game in the bottom half of the frame. Sophomore Justin Pacchioli came home on an error by Robb Scott and sophomore John Elson hit an RBI single off Dan Goldstein.

Elson finished 1-for-3 at the plate, while Ogren hit 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Bison. Goldstein got the win after throwing all seven innings, allowing five hits and striking out six batters. Stephens took the loss.

Game two was a pitcher's duel between Andrew Andreychik and junior Mike Burke for the first six innings. Burke walked three and allowed only one run and five hits when he was lifted with one out in the top of the seventh inning and Meier on second base. Sophomore Nick Macaione came on in relief and gave up an RBI double to Corey Furman, but Lehigh answered with a pinch hit sacrifice fly from freshman Mackey Price to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the seventh inning.

Bucknell continued to produce extra base hits into the outfield gaps and exploded with a five-run eighth inning in which Lehigh made two more pitching changes. A bases clearing double from Clark off sophomore Rene Tato created an insurmountable 7-1 lead for the Bison.
The middle of the order paced the Bucknell offense, as Rob Krentzman went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Ogren went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Sophomore Connor Faust was 1-for-3 and scored a run, while junior Joe Abeln was 2-for-3. Burke took the loss after a solid performance, and Andreychik came away with the win after throwing eight innings and allowing six hits.

Lehigh will host Penn at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to end a six-game home stand before facing Holy Cross in a pair of Patriot League doubleheaders beginning at 12 p.m. April 20 and 21.
