Walter Payton Award Watch List

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior wide receiver Lee Kurfis is off to a torrid start in 2013 and on Tuesday, Kurfis was added to the watch list for the Walter Payton Award, given to the outstanding player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Through six games, Kurfis leads the FCS in receptions and receiving yardage, while helping the Mountain Hawks to a 5-1 start and a top 20 national ranking.

In six games, the West Chester, Pennsylvania native has posted numbers that most receivers would strive for in a full season. Kurfis has 64 receptions for 934 yards and six touchdowns. He leads the FCS averaging 10.7 receptions per game, and tops the FCS in both overall receiving yards and yards per game (155.7).

Kurfis has eclipsed the 100 yard receiving mark in all six of Lehigh's games this season and seven straight games dating back to last season. He has ten or more receptions in four of Lehigh's six games in 2013, highlighted by a school record-tying 14 catch effort Saturday in the Mountain Hawks' 24-10 win at Columbia.

Earlier this year, Kurfis set a Goodman Stadium record with 222 receiving yards in Lehigh's season-opening come-from-behind win over Central Connecticut State, a game where two of his seven receptions went for touchdowns. The following week at Monmouth he caught ten passes for 211 yards and two more scores, becoming the first player in school and Patriot League history to record back-to-back 200 yard receiving games.

The initial watch list of 20 players was announced in July. Kurfis was one of three players added to the watch list on Tuesday, along with Fordham quarterback Michael Nebrich and Samford all-purpose back Fabian Truss.

Kurfis is the third Mountain Hawk in as many years to be named to the Walter Payton Award watch list. Wide Receiver Ryan Spadola was named to the preseason watch list in 2012, while quarterback Chris Lum was added to the watch list in October 2011 and went on to finish as the runner-up.

The 27th Walter Payton Award is voted on by a panel of media members and sports information directors at the conclusion of the regular season. The award will be presented along with the Buck Buchanan Award (top defensive player), the Eddie Robinson Award (top coach) and the Jerry Rice Award (top freshman) at the FCS national awards banquet Monday December 16 in Philadelphia.
