PRINCETON, N.J. – Seeds and brackets for the 108th EIWA Championships were announced Friday night following a meeting of the conference's head coaches. Eight of Lehigh's ten entrants were seeded in the top eight, with seven of those eight Mountain Hawks earning top three seeds. Eight Mountain Hawks will compete in the opening round while two received first-round byes.
Senior Brandon Hatchett nabbed Lehigh's lone, No. 1 seed as the returning All-American earned the top spot at 165. Hatchett will face Brown's Jeff Lemmer in a first round match.
Lehigh's two other returning All-Americans earned No. 2 seeds in the tournament. At 184, junior Robert Hamlin defeated Cornell's Steve Bosak three times last season, but Bosak's 2-1 win at the dual in Ithaca, N.Y. in January gave the Big Red grappler the No. 1 seed. Hamlin will open with Penn's Erich Smith in the opening round. Rey, lost to American's Ryan Flores in last year's EIWA finals, but defeated the Eagle three times last season, including the national finals at heavyweight. An undefeated regular season gave Flores the No. 1 seed over Rey, who lost just once in 21 bouts. Rey earned a first round bye and will face either No. 7 seed Dan Hopkins of Rutgers or Marcos Aranda of Brown in the quarterfinals.
Three other Lehigh wrestlers earned No. 3 seeds. At 133 freshman Mason Beckman earned the third seed and a first round matchup with Kyle Gilchrist of Columbia. Sophomore Steve Dutton is seeded third at 141 and will face Brown's Zach Tanenbaum in round one. Dutton majored Tanenbaum 12-3 back on February 11. Senior Joe Kennedy is Lehigh's third No. 3 seed and will open with Bucknell's Tyler Lyster at 197.
The Mountain Hawks' eighth seeded wrestler is junior Shane Welsh, who earned the No. 6 seed at 149. Welsh will open with Justin Belanger of EIWA newcomer Sacred Heart in the first round.
Sophomore Alex Abreu and senior Brian Tanen are the two Mountain Hawks who enter the EIWA Championships unseeded. Abreu drew No. 4 seed Thomas Williams of American in the opening round at 125, while Tanen will face No. 3 seed Walter Peppelman of Harvard at 157.
The 108th EIWA Championships get underway Saturday at 9 a.m. from Princeton's Jadwin Gym. Session one will feature preliminaries, quarterfinals and consolations, with session two, featuring the championship semifinals, scheduled to begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday morning's session three will begin at 10 a.m., while Sunday afternoon's finals are set for a 3 p.m. start.
