No. 13/14 Lehigh seeks third straight win Saturday versus Yale

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In its final tune-up before Patriot League play begins next weekend, No. 13/14 Lehigh welcomes the Yale Bulldogs to Goodman Stadium Saturday in a Patriot League versus Ivy League matchup. The Mountain Hawks are coming off an impressive 27-24 win over No. 23 Liberty on Homecoming last weekend. Chris Lum threw for 300 yards and threw two touchdowns, including the go-ahead 73-yard score to Keith Sherman right before halftime.
Yale enters Saturday's game at 2-0 after a pair of impressive offensive performances in wins over Georgetown and Cornell. The Bulldogs scored 37 points in both contests and rank 11th nationally in scoring offense. Quarterback Patrick Witt, a Nebraska transfer, is the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week, after throwing for 246 yards and accounting for three total touchdowns against the Big Red.
Lehigh's offense features a number of big play threats at the skill positions, and sophomore running back Keith Sherman has emerged as the newest weapon in the Mountain Hawks' arsenal. Sherman shook off an injury in preseason camp to catch a touchdown pass on his only play from scrimmage against New Hampshire. He rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown against Princeton and enjoyed the finest day of his young career against Liberty. Sherman rushed for a career-high 81 yards, including a career-long 29 yard rush against the Flames, and caught a swing pass that turned into a 73-yard, go-ahead touchdown late in the second quarter.Sophomore Tim Divers was named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. Divers has brought consistency to Lehigh's placekicking unit, connecting on all three of his extra point attempts plus a pair of 30-yard field goals in the win over Liberty. The field goals were the first for the Mountain Hawks this season. Since taking over the placekicking duties, Divers is 7-for-7 on extra points and 2-for-3 on field goals. He is also Lehigh's starting punter, averaging 38 yards per kick.
In recognition of competition between Lehigh University and Yale University, the lifetime achievements of their graduates, and the generations of families that have attended both universities, the Yank Townsend Trophy is presented to the winner of the Lehigh - Yale football game. Charles Frederick Townsend was the only student from Connecticut to enter the Lehigh Class of 1895, earning the nickname “Yank” He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in architecture and engineering, operated his own firm, Norton & Townsend from 1911-1960, and designed a number of bank buildings and colonial residences. Yank Townsend (1873-1963) was a devotee of Lehigh and Yale athletics, and today a trophy bearing his name is presented to the winner for the fourth time. Yale initially won the trophy in 2006 and has successfully retained it twice.
Lehigh and Yale have met 20 previous times with the Bulldogs leading the series 15-5. This series has been highlighted by streaks, as Yale won the first 12 meetings and then the Mountain Hawks won the next five. Yale has won the last three meetings, including a 7-0 win at Goodman Stadium in 2009, Lehigh's first shutout loss since 1986.
