BETHLEHEM, Pa. – This weekend marks the beginning of Patriot League play for the Mountain Hawks men's tennis team as they travel to West Point, N.Y. to take on Holy Cross and Army. Lehigh looks to build on an impressive 9-4 start to their spring season.
The Mountain Hawks were picked fourth in this year's preseason poll, after reaching the league semifinals last year for the first time since 2000. With a veteran lineup, Lehigh is on the path to being a strong contender for the league championship, which the Mountain Hawks will host in April.
Lehigh has been successful in the early part of the spring season, suffering only two losses since February 5. The Mountain Hawks remained unbeaten through six outings until Delaware snapped the winning streak on March 2. Since the loss, the squad has gone 2-1 with victories over SIU-Edwardsville on March 8 and St. Joseph's on March 20.
Saturday's opponent Holy Cross was picked to finish last in this year's preseason poll. The Crusaders are 0-3 this spring with losses to Coast Guard, Sacred Heart and Quinnipiac. Holy Cross did go 2-6 in dual matches during its fall season. In last year's meeting, Lehigh prevailed over Holy Cross with a 6-1 victory at West Point.
Army is 6-9 on the spring and enters the weekend on a two-match losing streak after falling to Buffalo and Furman last week in South Carolina. The Black Knights were picked second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, and have prevailed in a number of close matches with the Mountain Hawks in recent years. Army owns a 1-0 league mark after defeating Colgate 4-3 on March 6.
Saturday's Lehigh-Holy Cross match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center, while the Mountain Hawks will face Army Sunday at 9 a.m.
