BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the first time since 2005 the Lehigh football team is ranked in the top ten, as the Mountain Hawks come in at No. 10 in both major polls released Monday. The Mountain Hawks rolled to their third straight win on Saturday, downing Yale 37-7 at Goodman Stadium. Despite a stellar defensive effort and big offensive days from Chris Lum, Jake Drwal and Ryan Spadola, Lehigh failed to capture a Patriot League weekly award for the first time this season.
In the polls, Lehigh moved up three spots to No. 10 in the Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25. The Mountain Hawks garnered 2,322 points in the survey of media members and sports information directors. Delaware, Richmond and Southern Illinois were all ranked ahead of Lehigh in last week's poll, but all lost allowing the Mountain Hawks to rise into the top ten for the first time since October 2005.
Lehigh jumped four spots in the FCS Coaches Poll, picking up 407 points. The Mountain Hawks are chasing Appalachian State and William & Mary in both polls, as the Mountaineers and Tribe come in at Nos. 8 and 9 respectively. The top three teams in both polls are identical, with Georgia Southern occupying the No. 1 spot followed by Northern Iowa and Montana State.
The Mountain Hawks are preparing to open up Patriot League play as they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to face Bucknell in a battle of 4-1 teams. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium with audio coverage on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as Lehighsports.com.
