Goldberg takes title as Lehigh competes in NYC

NEW YORK – Four members of the Lehigh men's tennis team were in action over the weekend at the Billie Jean King NTC Men's College Invitational at the USTA National Tennis Center. Seniors Troy List and Collin Laffey, sophomore Matt Savran and freshman Mark Goldberg represented the Brown and White, with Goldberg enjoying the most success, going 4-0 to win the title at Flight G singles.
Goldberg, a freshman from Beachwood, Ohio, went 4-0 at G singles to claim the title in just his second college event. He did not drop a set in wins over opponents from Saint Peter's, Marist and Army. In the finals, Goldberg downed Will Reznek of Marist 6-2, 6-1.
List also had an impressive showing, reaching the finals at Flight D singles before losing 4-6, 7-6, 10-6 to Landon Greene of Marist. Along the way, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year picked up wins over opponents from Penn, Columbia and Harvard.
Laffey won his first round match over Yohei Shoji of Princeton 6-2, 6-1 at Flight E singles but stumbled in the quarterfinals against Yuri Gricheno of Fairleigh Dickinson and settled for a 1-2 showing.
Savran played at Flight F singles, dropping his first round match, but picking up a win over Robert Ferrante of Fairfield in three sets.
In doubles action, List and Laffey played together at Flight B, dropping three close matches along the way. Goldberg and Savran enjoyed better results at Flight D, downing the fourth-seeded team from Yale 8-0, before losing two matches.
Lehigh's full squad returns to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks host the two-day Lehigh Fall Invitational inside the Lewis Tennis Center and on the Ulrich Varsity Courts.
