BETHLEHEM, Pa. – One day after downing rival Lafayette 5-2 in Easton, the Lehigh men’s tennis team learned its Patriot League tournament fate on Tuesday as the league announced the seeds and schedules for the tournament that begins Friday in Lewisburg, Pa. Lehigh’s win over Lafayette clinched the No. 5 seed for the Mountain Hawks, who will meet No. 4 Colgate in Friday’s first quarterfinal on Bucknell’s Varsity Tennis Courts.
Lehigh finished the regular season at 9-11 overall and 2-4 in the league. The Mountain Hawks suffered a close 4-3 defeat against Colgate April 10 inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh picked up wins at first, fifth and sixth singles, but lost the doubles point and dropped three-set heartbreakers at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Colgate comes into Friday’s quarterfinal at 9-7 overall and 3-2 against league opponents.
The Mountain Hawks have never won the Patriot League championship and have advanced to the semifinals just four times, the most recent being 2000. The winner of the Lehigh-Colgate match will meet top seed Army in Saturday’s semifinals. The Mountain Hawks lost a close match to the Black Knights 4-3, while Colgate handed Army its lone league loss.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 3 seed Bucknell will meet No. 6 Lafayette at 1 p.m. and No. 2 Navy will square off against No. 7 Holy Cross at 4 p.m. The semifinals will be played Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the championship match for 12 p.m. Sunday.
The Patriot League tournament gets underway Friday at 10 a.m. with the Lehigh-Colgate match at Bucknell’s Varsity Tennis Courts. In the event of inclement weather, the tournament will be moved indoors to the West Branch Tennis Courts in Williamsport, Pa.
