Angelo helps Lehigh earn a split against Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh baseball team got another strong pitching performance, as senior Greg Angelo halted the Navy hitters on Sunday to help the Mountain Hawks earn a series split with the Midshipmen. Angelo and his Lehigh teammates defeated Navy 5-2 in game one, but the Midshipmen were able to bounce back and take game two 7-0. The Brown and White finished off the first weekend of Patriot League play with an 8-16 (2-2) record, while Navy is 19-10 (2-2).
“Angelo was able to pitch out of a couple of tough situations and he threw well today,” head coach Sean Leary commented about game one. “We were able to get good offensive pressure all game and we just kept plugging away to keep building the lead.”
The Mountain Hawks opened up the scoring in game one when junior Logan Winchester singled in his classmate Kevin Mihalik. Junior Chad Warga added to the scoring with a sac fly that brought in junior Austin Borden.
With Lehigh up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, Navy was finally able to get its bats going and tie the game. The Midshipmen loaded the bases with two outs and a single by Michael Speciale knocked in two runs to even the score.
The Brown and White came right back in the top of the fourth, as Winchester singled in his second run of the game, which turned out to be the game winner.
Lehigh would go onto add two additional insurance runs off sac fly’s from Mihalik and junior Brendan McGaheran.
Angelo pitched five innings, giving up four hits and both of the runs scored against him were unearned. Sophomore Cory Kent came in and pitched the final two innings of the game to pick up the save. The Mountain Hawks had nine hits in the game and were led by McGaheran who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
“Cory was able to come into the game and shut them down,” Leary said. “He was real sharp today.”
It was a different story in game two, as Lehigh’s bats went cold and the Midshipmen were able to find their rhythm in both the field and at the plate.
“Navy’s pitcher in game two was really using his two pitches well and give him credit he beat us,” Leary said. “We fought hard all weekend and just came up short in the final game of the series.”
Navy was able to get on the board in the first inning and ride the strong pitching of Ben Nelson to the victory. Nelson finished the game going eight strong innings and giving up only four hits.
The Mountain Hawks left three runners on base in the first two innings and failed to get anything going the rest of the game. Lehigh finished with four hits in the game from four different players: McGaheran, Winchester, junior Billy Goldman and freshman Brandon Sady.
Junior Mike Lebo took the loss on the mound for the Mountain Hawks and senior Rob Russell came in and pitched the final five innings in relief.
Lehigh will return home to the Bethlehem and have only one day to prepare for game one of the Liberty Bell Classic Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. against Temple in Philadelphia.
