Fast start leads Mountain Hawks over Leopards

EASTON, Pa. – Sophomore Lauren Dykstra scored five goals to lead Lehigh to a 14-7 victory over archrival Lafayette on Saturday afternoon. Dykstra netted two of her scores in the first half as Lehigh opened up a 6-1 advantage at halftime and coasted from there to improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League play. Kelly Draper, Meagan Tenety and Allison Thomas all scored two goals for Lehigh, which wins its second straight over the Leopards who remain winless for the season at 0-7.
Lehigh out shot its counterpart 29-16 on the afternoon led by Dykstra’s nine and Draper and Meagan Tenety with five apiece. The Mountain Hawks scooped up 16 ground balls including three from Dykstra, Sara MacIntyre and Inneke Carmola, while Thomas won a team best four draw controls. Kelsy Ferris earned the win in goal with four saves in her 60 minutes of action. Lehigh was also 14-of-17 in clear attempts, and committed only ten turnovers.
Thomas scored 50 seconds into the game giving Lehigh a quick 1-0 lead. Dykstra scored six minutes later and MacIntyre made it a three-goal advantage with 19:51 on the first half clock. Michaela Corn got Lafayette on the board for the first time on a free position shot five minutes after MacIntyre’s goal, but Draper, Dykstra and Thomas scored for Lehigh in the final 13 minutes and the Brown and White took a 6-1 lead into the halftime break.
Carmola scored the first goal of the second half with Dykstra adding her third score of the afternoon soon after. Draper then made it an eight-goal lead for the Mountain Hawks as she scored on a free position shot with 24:41 left in the game. Lafayette ripped off three goals in the next 2:11 to trim the Lehigh lead to five, but Tenety put an end to the Leopards run with an unassisted goal at the 22:14 mark.
Dykstra netted number four on a free position shot to push the lead back to seven, and the sophomore added her fifth and final goal with 3:41 remaining to all but seal it. Tenety tacked on an insurance score off of a feed from Draper with 24 ticks to go and Lehigh earned its second road win of the season.
Lauren Brown netted a hat trick for Lafayette and led the Leopards with five shots and four draw controls. Alexa Biale stopped ten Lehigh shots in goal for the home team, which turned the ball over 20 times.
Lehigh begins a four game homestand on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks welcome the Columbia Lions to the Ulrich Sports Complex. The opening draw control is set for 3:30.
