Lehigh picked fifth in PL preseason poll

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh was picked to finish fifth in the Patriot League’s preseason poll, announced Thursday. The Mountain Hawks garnered 31 points in the poll, which is voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Lehigh finished fifth in the league standings before falling to No. 4 Bucknell in last year’s Patriot League tournament.

This year’s Lehigh team is a young one, as five Mountain Hawks made their spring varsity debuts in Saturday’s season-opening 7-0 loss at Brown. Senior John Nespoli and junior Mike Gordon were the only Mountain Hawks with any prior varsity experience to see action in that match.

Defending tournament champion Navy was picked to finish first in the poll, with 10 out of a possible 14 first place votes. Second place Army garnered the other four first place votes, with Bucknell and Colgate rounding out the top four. Lafayette was picked sixth, after Lehigh, with Holy Cross rounding out the poll.

The Mountain Hawks (0-1) will open their home schedule on Sunday, when they host Fairleigh Dickinson at the Lewis Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
