Lehigh earns stunning win over Stony Brook

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh pulled off a stunning upset of Stony Brook Saturday afternoon, dropping the ECAC 16th ranked Seawolves 4-3. The win moves Lehigh to 3-1 on the season, while Stony Brook falls to 1-3. The afternoon action started with doubles play. Lehigh managed a pair of wins, winning first and third doubles. In first doubles, the tandem of Ty Esler/Ryan Cann defeated Mike Crooks/Egil Anonsen 8-5. Jonathan Swanson and Craig Ditman fell in second doubles 8-4, setting the stage for the third and final doubles match of the afternoon. In third doubles, Randall Smalley/Andrew Shapiro defeated Philippe Amireault/Patnick Drozdzik 8-4. On the single side, Lehigh dropped its first match 6-4, 6-3, as Esler fell to Crooks. The Mountain Hawks would go on to win their next three singles matches with victories by Cann, Smalley, and Swanson. Stony Brook bounced back, winning fifth and sixth singles. In the end; however, The Mountain Hawks came out on top. "Our program’s goal has always been to get ranked within the top 16 teams in the east," said head coach Dave Shook. "Stony Brook has been there for several years and it was a great win for us, and is a step in the right direction." Lehigh returns to action Sunday vs. Drexel. The men open play at 10:00 a.m. and the women face off with the Dragons at 2:00 p.m.
