Lehigh falls in season opener

Philadelphia, PA- The Lehigh men’s tennis squad opened its 2003 season with a 7-0 loss to the Pennsylvania Quakers. With the loss Lehigh falls to 0-1, while Penn improves to 2-0, having also defeated Swarthmore later in the afternoon. In the third doubles, the tandem of John Swanson and Andrew Shapiro were defeated 8-2 by Jimmy Fairbanks and David Lynn. At first doubles the Mountain Hawks’ pair of Ty Esler and Randall Smalley were upended 8-4 by Ryan Hardwood and Anthony Pu. In first singles action Esler fell to Lynn 6-2, 6-0, giving Penn a 2-0 lead. At second singles, Hardwood faced off against Smalley and came out on top 6-1, 6-1. Ryan Cann would be the Quakers next victim at third singles. Cann, one of Lehigh’s top returnees, was defeated 6-4, 6-1 by Alex Fritz. The Mountain Hawks would then get swept in the fourth, fifth and, sixth singles positions en route to their first defeat of the season. Lehigh returns to action on February 8th vs. Stony Brook at 10:00 a.m.
