BETHLEHEM, Pa. – At the conclusion of the 2009 season, Lehigh head coach Dave Shook announced the annual team awards for the Mountain Hawks’ men’s tennis squad. Sophomores Troy List and Collin Laffey and freshman Edgars Rauza all garnered awards for the Brown and White, as a young Lehigh squad that often started six underclassmen managed to increase its win-total from six in 2008 to eight in 2009.
List received the Outstanding Athlete Award, which is presented to the member of the team who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team. A first-team All-Patriot League selection, List was Lehigh’s top performer in both singles and doubles in 2009. List was a team-best 14-8 playing No. 1 singles and was also 12-9 at first doubles playing alongside Laffey. He is a two-time All-Patriot League selection and was honored as the Patriot League’s Player of the Month of February.
Laffey was the recipient of the Coaches Award, which is awarded to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. A transfer from Niagara, Laffey stepped into the Lehigh lineup at No. 2 singles and made an impact, especially in Patriot League play, where he went 3-3 including the deciding point in a win over rival Lafayette.
Rauza earned the Scholar-Athlete Award given to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. The freshman from Latvia earned a 3.06 grade point average in the College of Business and Economics. On the court, Rauza played anywhere from third to fifth singles and was second on the team with 11 singles victories in 2009.
