Mountain Hawks hold first scrimmage of camp

Coen continued, “Guys are out here competing for jobs, so we’re looking to see who takes advantage of the opportunity placed in front of them and steps up. Some guys were given that chance and didn’t step up, but we’ll know more once we look at the tape later on.”
The Mountain Hawks focused on red zone situations, along with kick off coverage and goal line situations, amongst other things, during the scrimmage. Coen pointed out a few positions and players that played well throughout the afternoon. “I thought (running back) Matt McGowan played well today, as did all of our running backs. The quarterbacks were a little inconsistent with their play as they continue to learn more about the offense.” He continued, “(Senior wide receiver) Lee Thomas played well, he had a couple of nice catches and on defense I thought the defensive line did a nice job throughout.”
Earlier in the morning on Saturday, Lehigh was busy as the student-athletes posed for pictures and players as well as the coaching staff chatted with local media members at the team’s annual Media Day inside of Goodman Stadium. The Mountain Hawks had both their posed and television headshots taken, along with positional pictures, and the team photo.
Lehigh will be back at work on Sunday going through another set of double session practices as the Mountain Hawks continue their preseason preparations with an eye towards the September 2 opener versus the Great Danes of Albany.
CAMP NOTES … Saturday’s scrimmage was played under mostly cloudy and humid conditions with a light rain towards the end, as temperatures hovered in the mid-80’s … on Saturday morning Lehigh moved out of the Brodhead dorm where the team and coaches had been staying since the beginning of preseason camp … former Lehigh wideout Gerran Walker, who is in training camp with the San Diego Chargers, returned a kickoff 30 yards and caught one pass for eight yards on Friday evening in the team’s preseason matchup with the Chicago Bears.
