Bethlehem, PA – Although football season traditionally gets underway in the fall, one former Lehigh star is making headlines in late May. Former Lehigh standout Phil Stambaugh continues to perform well as a member of the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe.
Stambaugh, a 1999 Lehigh graduate, is among the league leaders in a number of categories so far this season. In last Sunday’s game against the Rhein Fire, Stambaugh completed 22 of 37 passes for 243 yards, while also rushing for a touchdown.
The game was televised nationally across the United States on Fox Sports, and many have taken notice. According to NFL.com’s Pat Kirwan, Stambaugh is at the top of the list among those who could be signed by an NFL team following the NFLEL’s World Bowl, which takes place on June 14.
"[Stambaugh] now leads the class of NFL Europe free-agent signal-callers," Kirwan writes. "A quarterback who plays in the spring league has the opportunity to throw under pressure, learn gameplans, manage a clock, play in a two-minute environment and deal with sideline adjustments. None of that happens back at an NFL complex during the offseason."
While at Lehigh, Stambaugh set a number of passing records. He holds school records for most career touchdowns (78), completions (818), yards (9,669), and completion percentage (63.71%). As a junior, Stambaugh was the Patriot League’s Player of the Year.
Phil Stambaugh’s Berlin Thunder team returns to action on Saturday, May 31, when they visit the Amsterdam Admirals.
