Lehigh fourth in latest polls
9/19/2003 12:00:00 AM | Football
Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh scored 24 unanswered fourth quarter points to defeat Princeton in a dramatic come-from-behind victory, but it did not impress the pollsters as the Brown & White slipped one place in both The Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today polls.
The Mountain Hawks now occupy the number four position in both polls after needing the big comeback to defeat the Tigers. The letter ‘M’ is the theme ahead of Lehigh, as Montana, McNeese St. and Maine rank 1-2-3 in the two polls.
The drop this week marked the second straight slide for the Mountain Hawks. McNeese St. jumped ahead of the idle Lehigh last week before Maine slipped past the Brown & White after the close call with Princeton.
Lehigh entered the fourth quarter of the tangle with the Tigers trailing 24-7. Dave Wilson started the comeback with a one-yard plunge with 14:54 remaining. After a Matt Douglas field goal made it 24-16, Matt Salvaterra picked off a Princeton pass and took it to the house. Quarterback Chad Schwenk finished the job with just 0:13 remaining, when he found Justin Barrasso for the go-ahead score.
The Brown & White will square off against an Ivy League foe for the second straight week on September 28. Lehigh travels to Philadelphia to take on the Quakers of Penn. Kick off is set for 6:30. The action can be heard live on WKAP 1470 AM, and the game will be broadcast live on WFMZ-TV throughout eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey. The contest will also be replayed on both Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh and DirecTV.
