Bethlehem, PA – Following a 69-0 thrashing of Patriot League foe Georgetown Saturday, Lehigh vaulted five spots in the ESPN/USA Today I-AA football poll to the number two slot. In The Sports Network poll, the Mountain Hawks eased up a notch from three to the second spot following the victory. Lehigh received three first place votes in the latest TSN poll, released Monday.
The movement in the polls follows Lehigh’s large margin of victory over the Hoyas. The Mountain Hawks racked up 608 yards of total offense in posting their largest margin of victory since a 78-0 win over Lafayette in 1917. Lehigh’s defense was also recognized by the College Sporting News for allowing Georgetown to amass only 98 yards of total offense on 50 plays. The win was Lehigh’s 24th straight at Goodman Stadium, dating back to 1997, and also Lehigh’s 25th straight regular season victory – the longest such streak in all of Division I.
"We continue to be pleased with the level of respect our program is getting nationally," said second year Lehigh head coach Pete Lembo. "At the same time, we fully understand that we must back it up with our play in each subsequent weekend."
Lehigh enjoys a bye this week, before taking to the gridiron once again on September 21, when it plays host to Princeton at Goodman Stadium in the first of three straight contests against Ivy League schools. The game is the opener for the Tigers, and kickoff is set for 1:00. The action can be heard live on WKAP 1470 AM, and the game will be broadcast on both Service Electric Cable TV and Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh. Tickets for the game can be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME.
