Bethlehem, PA – With opening day merely three weeks away, Lehigh freshmen football players reported on Wednesday to take part in orientation, academic counseling, and a series of tests designed to ready the group for life on the field and in the classroom at Lehigh. Among other drills, the newcomers took part in a pro agility test, vertical jump, and a 40-yard dash.
Lehigh head coach Pete Lembo, set to enter his second season, liked what he saw. "I’m very pleased with the speed shown by this class," Lembo remarked.
Three Mountain Hawks clocked in with times better than a 4.5-40. Wide receiver Greg Petrosky registered a time of 4.42, fellow wide receiver Gerran Walker posted a time of 4.47, and running back Eric Rath clocked in at 4.48.
In the pro agility test, defensive back David Snell, wide receiver Winfred Porter, wide receiver Kevin Zeblium, and defensive back Kaloma Cardwell especially performed well. They all completed the test in under 4.3 seconds.
In other goings-on, Porter paced the group in the vertical jump, leaping 35.5 inches. He was one of ten Mountain Hawks posting a vertical jump of 30 inches or better. Many linemen were impressive in the weight room. Defensive tackle John Hatchell bench pressed 480 pounds. Defensive lineman Chris Zambrano led the group by squatting 466 pounds.
"These kids have really shown us a good attitude," Lembo said. "They’re excited to be here and are getting along well with each other. I’m looking forward to introducing them to the upperclassmen."
Lehigh starts two-a-day practices on Saturday, as the Mountain Hawks begin their quest for a fifth straight Patriot League title. Opening day is only three weeks away, as the Mountain Hawks open their season at Division I-A Buffalo on Thursday, August 29. Kick-off is set for 7:30 pm from Amherst, New York.
