White sacks Brown in spring game

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh held its annual Brown and White spring football game on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Stadium. The white team beat the brown team 17-7 behind a pair of field goals by Matt Douglas and two safeties by its defense. The defenses dominated for most of the game as the offenses seemed to be a bit out of rhythm due to the division of the players.
For the first time in recent years, the game consisted of two teams that each had an offense and a defense. Over the past few years due to numbers, Lehigh played offense vs. defense in the spring game.
Howard Ward scampered in from two yards out in the fourth quarter for the White’s only touchdown of the game. The score came on a 54-yard drive by the white that was six plays.
Quarterbacks Kyle Keating and Matt Shiels both looked impressive in the game. Both completed a majority of their passes and ran their respective offenses rather smoothly. Newcomer Chad Schwenk struggled completing just one pass attempt for 14 yards.
Dave Crockett and Steve Hluschak were the leading receivers on the afternoon. Crocket caught a 52-yard pass and Hluschak looked more like a possession receiver catching a number of short balls over the middle. Crockett was also on the passing end of a gadget play that resulted in the only score for the Brown team. Crockett caught a pass from quarterback Klye Keating in the backfield and then threw it 27 yards to a wide-open Adam Bergen in the endzone.
The only other big play of note was a 76-yard pass play from Kevin Weschler to Brad Sersch. Sersch was left uncovered by the secondary and Weschler hit him in stride before Sersch was eventually caught and dragged down by Sam Perryman.
Lehigh played without several key players that were out due to injury. Running back Dave Wilson is still rehabilitating from knee surgery last fall and Jeremaine Pugh was also sidelined with an injury.
Prior to the game current junior Matt Salvaterra and Jeff Santacroce were named the 2002 team captains. Next season will be Salvaterra’s second season as a team captain.
Lehigh opens its season on August 29th when it takes on Division I-A opponent Buffalo on a Thursday night at 7:30. The game is tentatively scheduled to be televised on WFMZ Channel 69 and can be heard live in the Lehigh Valley on Oldies 1470 AM WKAP and worldwide on the Internet via the Lehigh website.
