Lehigh assistant coach Dave Ungerer has accepted a position as special teams coach for the University of California. Ungerer will join first year head coach Jeff Tedford and six other new assistant coaches in the Cal football program.
Ungerer, a coaching veteran of 19 college seasons, has coached running backs and special teams at Lehigh the past two seasons. During that period, the Mountain Hawks etched a 23-2 record and advanced to the NCAA Division 1-AA semifinals this past season and to the quarterfinals in 2000. Lehigh has prided itself on being one of the top teams in Division I-AA in the special teams categories over the past few seasons, largely to Ungerer’s efforts.
Prior to his stay at Lehigh, Ungerer coached running backs and special teams for seven years at Maryland (1991-97) and four seasons at Holy Cross (1988-91), where he also served as strength and conditioning coach.
A 1980 graduate of Southern Connecticut State, where he letter four years at running back, Ungerer christened his coaching career at Rutgers as a graduate assistant from 1983-85. He later coached defensive line and special teams at Northeastern (1985) and Davidson (1986-87).
