Lehigh wins 18th straight at Goodman

After a slow first half, Lehigh took over the game in the second, spoiling the Princeton Tigers’ season opener. The 34-10 victory at Lehigh’s Goodman Stadium ups the Mountain Hawks’ record to 2-0 on the season, and marks Lehigh’s 18th consecutive home win and 13th over an Ivy League opponent.
After being shutout in the first half, and turning the ball over three times, Lehigh tallied all 34 of their points, and forced 3 turnovers in the second, en route to their victory in front of a crowd of 10, 893.
Brant Hall did it all for the Hawks, with a career high 119 yards rushing on 15 carries including two touchdowns. He was 12-17 in the air for 213 yards.
Sam Perryman, who had 9.5 tackles on the afternoon, led Lehigh’s defense and Abdul Byron and Mike Taggart chipped in with 7 tackles apiece.
Princeton took a 3-0 lead into the locker room after a lethargic first half marked by a total of 5 turnovers by both teams.
Taylor Northrop, who handled the punting and kicking duties for Princeton, may have been the most valuable player for the Tigers in the first half. His 37-yarder boomed through the southern goal post and landed just beyond the fencing 15 yards behind the uprights, and Northrop pinned Lehigh inside of its own ten with his first three punt attempts.
Lehigh’s only first half drive into the red-zone, set up by two Brant Hall runs (11,25), was stalled after a fumbled snap, and Lehigh’s second turnover.
Brant Hall and his offense came out clicking I n the second half. Hall marched the Mountain Hawks from their own 43 to the endzone, on five plays. Capping the drive was a one-yard touchdown spurt by Hall, and highlighting the drive was an 18-yard reception by Phil Eversley, who dragged three Princeton defenders for the last five yards of his acrobatic run.
"I thought our team did an excellent job in the second half," said head coach Pete Lembo. "We struggled to get the offense going in the first half but I have to give credit to our senior leadership of Brant Hall and Josh Snyder for finding a way to get it done in the second half."
"Coach Cecchini challenged us (Hall and Snyder) during halftime to come out and make something happen," said senior wide-out Josh Snyder. "I knew I had to find a way to get open and when I did Brant was able to find me. We hooked up twice on the opening drive and that really got our offense going."
Princeton’s Andy Bryant fumbled the ensuing kickoff, after getting crunched by Jared Breidinger on his own 10. Lehigh took over at the 14, and it only took them two plays from there. Phil Pleasant went 11 yards after Hall flipped him the option, and Lehigh had the 14-3 lead.
More of the same for Lehigh, who followed that score by recovering another Princeton fumble, and marching 32 yards on 7 plays to set up a Brian Kelly field goal.
The Mountain Hawks proceeded to stop Princeton, and put the ball in the endzone again. This time it was only three plays, capped by an 11-yard dash by Hall, and setup by a 40-yard completion to Eversley.
Princeton countered with a 10 play, 75-yard drive, finished with a three-yard TD pass to Blair Morrison.
Lehigh added 10 more points on a Kelly field goal, and Lawrence Williams’ interception return for a touchdown.
The Mountain Hawks, ranked 10th nationally in the Sports Network poll, are now 34-1 in regular season play over the last three-plus seasons.
Lehigh returns to Goodman Stadium on Saturday, September 29 to battle the Blue Devils of Central Connecticut. Kickoff is set for 1:05 pm.
