BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior offensive lineman Frank Giacalone is one of 154 semifinalists for the 2009 William V. Campbell Trophy endowed by HealthSouth (formerly known as the Draddy Trophy), as announced by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame on Thursday. This marks the second consecutive season in which a Mountain Hawk was named a semifinalist for the award after Brendan Van Ackeren ’09 received the honor in 2008.
A native of Princeton, New Jersey Giacalone carries a 3.29 grade point average as a Material Sciences and Engineering major and has made multiple appearances on the Dean’s List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Giacalone has appeared in 23 games during his career, having started a handful of times along the offensive line. This year he is Lehigh’s starting right guard, while in 2007 he was a member of an offensive line that yielded only 14 sacks for the season which ranked first in the Patriot League and 23rd in America.
Off the field Giacalone is highly involved in a number of initiatives including Lehigh’s C.O.A.C.H. program (Community Outreach), Alpha Sigma Mu (Material Sciences and Engineering Honor Society), Delta Upsilon Fraternity for which he serves as the Rush Chairman and Recruitment Coordinator, and he is the elected leader of a cross disciplinary team in Integrated Product Development (IPD). Giacalone is also a volunteer dog walker at a local animal shelter and serves as a recruitment tour guide.
From the group of 154 semifinalists, the NFF awards committee will select and announce up to 15 finalists on October 29. Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2009 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, receiving an $18.000 post-graduate scholarship. The Campbell Trophy winner, who will have his scholarship increased to $25,000, will be announced live at the NFF’s annual awards dinner on December 8 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. A total distribution of $277,000 in scholarships will be awarded that evening.
Giacalone and his teammates hit the field on Saturday afternoon when they play host to the Harvard Crimson at Goodman Stadium. Kick-off is set for 12:30 and tickets can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME or by logging onto Lehighsports.com.
