BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh hits the road for the first time this season as the Mountain Hawks head to Villanova to take on the No. 21 Wildcats in their home opener. Lehigh is coming off a strong opener last week in which the Brown and White shut out Drake behind a career day from senior Matt McGowan who rushed 39 times for 172 yards. The Mountain Hawks “D” pitched its second shutout under Andy Coen in as many seasons, limiting the Bulldogs to just seven first downs, seven yards rushing and 125 total yards. Villanova has not played since dropping a 48-21 decision at FBS member West Virginia on August 30.
Lehigh held Drake to a total of seven rushing yards, the lowest mark by a Lehigh opponent since Stony Brook finished with minus-30 yards in the 2004 opener. The Bulldogs finished with just 125 total yards, the fewest Lehigh has surrendered since Georgetown gained only 98 total yards in a 69-0 dismantling by the Mountain Hawks in 2002.
Lehigh dominated time of possession versus Drake, holding the ball for over 35 total minutes, including nearly 11 minutes in the third quarter alone. Lehigh’s 11 minute advantage in total TOP was its largest since last season at Princeton when the Mountain Hawks held the ball for 18 more minutes than the Tigers.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 1:00 from Villanova Stadium. The contest will not be televised, but can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 AM as well as Lehighsports.com with Matt Kerr, Kody Fedorcha ’00 and Matt Markus.
