Lehigh second at ECAC Championships

NEWPORT, R.I. – Lehigh resumed fall play this weekend, looking to defend its 2005 title at the ECAC Women’s Open Tennis Championships. The Mountain Hawks had an impressive showing, but had to settle for second in the eight team event, three points behind
The field was broken into five brackets, with four flights of singles and a flight of doubles. All four Lehigh singles players won at least one match to reach the semifinals, with senior co-captain Francesca Murasko-Blank having the best showing, finishing second in fourth singles. The pleasant surprise for the Mountain Hawks was the play of the doubles team of sophomore Victoria Vityuk and freshman Julie Arthofer, who won the doubles title with a 7-6, 2-1 win over Steph Catanzano and Amanda Barletta of Rhode Island. The URI duo had to retire in the second set giving Lehigh the win and key team points.
“Our kids played really well this weekend,” said Lehigh head coach Dave Shook. “I was especially impressed with our doubles play, with Julie being a freshman and Vic a sophomore who didn’t play much last year. They came through with a huge win that helped us get second place.”
