Rider knocks off No. 21 Mountain Hawks, 24-14

11/10/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Rider Broncs won six of ten bouts and earned a pair of falls to earn a 24-14 win over No. 21 Lehigh in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Alumni Gym. The loss is the Mountain Hawks’ first season opening dual loss in three years, and just third of the Greg Strobel era. Rider added two sudden victory wins to their two falls as the Broncs earned their first win over Lehigh after losing the last nine meets versus the Mountain Hawks.

“It was a real good dual meet for college wrestling, “said Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel. “The fans filled the arena and fired up the Rider team and we didn’t come with the same fire. I thought there could be a big swing either way, and they were able to win the close bouts.

The night started promisingly for Lehigh, with senior Patrick Berger being tough on top, using his riding ability to gain an advantage, then adding a late takedown to defeat Tony Lorenzo  at 125.

The Broncs took the next two bouts, with Matt Bradley edging Seth Ciasulli in Sudden Victory and then Don Fisch held off Jeff Santo 10-9.

The Mountain Hawks evened things at six at 149 in yet another close bout with Trevor Chinn gaining a riding time advantage to defeat Mike Kessler 4-3.

Rider gained the upper hand in the dual however winning the next three bouts, with Dave Miller edging Dave Nakasone 8-7 and then the turning point, a defensive fall by Rob Morrison over Lehigh freshman Mike Galante. Morrison was able to pin Galante’s shoulders after Galante scored a takedown and was trying for near-fall points. Doug Umbehauer completed the Rider run with a 3-1 sudden victory win over Dave Helfrich.

The long-awaited debut of highly-touted freshman David Craig was low scoring, but victorious as Craig earned a 2-1 decision over Mike Miller. Craig earned a point for Miller fleeing the mat, then added a second period escape.

T.J. Morrison clinched the dual for the Broncs with a fall over Eddy Silverman, who was subbing for Matt Cassidy at 197. Paul Weibel, put a final five points on the board for the Brown and White, using a series of takedowns and tilts to earn a 17-2 technical fall over Nick Ciufo.

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Thursday when No. 7 Michigan visits Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for the 2006-07 home opener. Tickets are sold out, but the match will be televised locally on Service Electric 2 Sports and broadcast on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320. The match will also be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming audio and video powered by Yahoo! Sports.
