Davidson (5-7) reliever Simon Yochum earned the win after striking out six batters in 3.0 scoreless innings. Lehigh (3-7) starter Christopher Nell was credited with the loss while Carson Taggart picked up the save for the Wildcats.
The Mountain Hawks faced an early deficit after being retired in order and conceding four runs in the first inning. Trystan Crawford put a run on the board for Lehigh with an RBI single in the top of the second, but Lehigh quickly fell into an 8-1 hole after Davidson scored more in the bottom of the frame.
Ryan Cochran got a run back for Lehigh courtesy of a sac-fly in the top of the third. After holding the Wildcats scoreless in the bottom of the third, the Mountain Hawks delivered four runs in the fourth thanks to RBIs from Edwin Betances, Silvio Giardina, and Cochran. Despite trailing 8-1 early, Lehigh nearly eliminated their deficit just as quickly.
The Wildcats were held scoreless in the fourth before a bases loaded walk in the fifth gave Davidson a two-run advantage. The two teams traded scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh until Lehigh faced a bases loaded situation with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Manjooran doubled down the left field line and cleared the bases to give the Wildcats a 12-7 lead.
Davidson added an additional two runs in the bottom of the eighth to push their lead to seven. Jack Frankovic and Ian Wirtz batted in two runs in the top of the ninth, but Taggart recorded the outs necessary to secure his save and a Davidson victory.
Cochran was fantastic at the plate, going 3-3 with three RBIs, two runs scored, a double, and a hit by pitch. Giardina recorded the best performance of his young career, going 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Crawford went 2-4 with an RBI and a walk while Dom Patrizi, Robbie Carvelli, Owen Walewander, Betances, and Wirtz also registered hits for the Mountain Hawks.
Tommy Lamar, Jake Mulvehill, and Ryan Holman also appeared on the mound for the Mountain Hawks. Mulvehill finished the day striking out six batters in 3.0 scoreless innings.
The Mountain Hawks will play game two of the series at Atrium Health Ballpark, the home of the Single-A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m.
