BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball played its home opener at J. David Walker Field on Wednesday afternoon against the Muhlenberg Mules. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Mules by a score of 5-1.
Lehigh (3-6) starting pitcher Jake Mulvehill picked up his second win of the season, striking out three batters while allowing one hit in 2.0 scoreless innings. Muhlenberg (1-2) starter Joseph Stern was credited with the loss after allowing two runs in 3.0 complete innings.
Mulvehill kicked off the day with two backwards Ks in the top of the first inning. Aidan Quinn got the scoring started for the Mountain Hawks in the bottom of the first, scoring Dom Patrizi on an RBI single. Quinn then scampered home on a throwing error from Muhlenberg's shortstop later in the inning to set the score at 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Mountain Hawks until the bottom of the fifth when a Trystan Crawford double to deep left field sent Ryan Cochran past home plate. The Mules then got one back in the sixth inning on a Marty Edson RBI single to cut their deficit to two runs.
After two more scoreless innings from both sides, Lehigh added two runs of insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Davis singled home Trystan Crawford before Davis came home on a passed ball, extending the lead to four runs. Brandon Coughlin retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to seal the home victory for the Mountain Hawks.
Crawford and Cochran had big days at the plate, both going 2-3 with two doubles apiece. Quinn, Davis, Ian Wirtz, and Jasper Adelman also recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks. In addition to Mulvehill and Coughlin, Jackson Shepelsky, Max Treonze, David Andolina, Declan Wilkes, and Ralph Gariano also appeared on the mound for Lehigh.
