LEWISBURG, Pa. – Originally slated for Saturday, Lehigh baseball faced off against the Bucknell Bison on the road on Monday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks claimed a 1-0 seven-inning victory in game one and fell 6-5 in walk off fashion in game two.
Lehigh (16-15, 5-7 PL) starter Cole Leaman was terrific in game one, striking out eight batters while allowing only two hits and zero runs in 6.1 innings of work. Senior Marcus Danchision earned the save after securing the final two outs of the game. Bucknell (12-19, 4-8 PL) starter Ben McGovern picked up the loss after allowing Lehigh's lone run in the top of the seventh.
The Mountain Hawks had a strong start to the first, as Jake Whitlinger and Dom Patrizi got hits in their first at bats. However, the Bison were able to escape the jam. The same would happen for Lehigh, as Leaman evaded a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the first.
Leaman was mechanical following the first inning, only allowing one hit the rest of the way. All the while, Magovern did his part to keep Bucknell in the game, striking out five while allowing only four hits.
Lehigh finally broke the seal in the top of the seventh and final inning of game one. Raffaele Rogers got on base with a walk and Owen Walewander reached first on an error, advancing Rogers to third. On the next at bat, Rogers came home on a wild pitch to score the first and only run of the game.
Whitlinger, Patrizi and Andrew Kohl recorded hits in game one for the Mountain Hawks.
First-year Noah Gyauch-Quirk started game two for Lehigh, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and only two hits allowed. Bucknell reliever Hadley Maxwell earned the win by keeping the Mountain Hawks scoreless in the top of the ninth while Jake Mulvehill was credited with the loss.
Gyauch-Quirk faced only ten batters through the first three innings, keeping the lid shut on the Bison. Bucknell did the same to Lehigh until the third inning when the Mountain Hawks scored all five of their runs. Whitlinger reached on an error that scored Robbie Carvelli followed by Patrizi reaching on catcher's interference the next play. Aidan Quinn then crushed a homer to right field, scoring three runs in the process. An additional RBI double from Walewander set the score at 5-0 through three.
After five full innings, Gyauch-Quirk was replaced to start the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bison found their offense in the frame, scoring four runs on two RBI singles and a sac-fly to bring themselves within one. In the bottom of the eighth, Luke Nascimento doubled down the left field line, scoring a run to tie the game headed to the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth, Lehigh managed to get the first two runners aboard via two walks. Rogers then singled with one out to load the bases. Despite loading the bases, the Bison were able to escape the jam. With two outs on the board in the bottom of the ninth, Michael Trommer doubled home Billy Kender to walk it off for Bucknell.
Quinn, Rogers, Walewander and Carvelli provided Lehigh's hits in game two. In addition to Gyauch-Quirk and Mulvehill, David Andolina and Max Treonze pitched for the Mountain Hawks.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Wednesday, April 9 to welcome Muhlenberg at 3:30 p.m. at J. David Walker Field.
