Mountain Hawks Split Doubleheader, Win Season Series Over Navy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After Saturday's game two was postponed, Lehigh baseball played host to the Navy Midshipmen for a doubleheader on Sunday on Senior Day. The Mountain Hawks won the season series against the Midshipmen with a 4-3 win in game one despite a 2-1 loss in game two.
Prior to the start of game one, seniors Justin Butler, Marcus Danchision, Jack Hamilton, Sam Holtz, Andrew Kohl, Val Taddei and Jake Whitlinger were honored alongside their families.
Lehigh (21-21, 10-12 PL) reliever Cole Kochanowicz earned the win in game one, striking out four in 3.2 scoreless innings. Starter Noah Gyauch-Quirk also threw well, striking out five batters in 3.1 innings. Navy (23-22, 14-11 PL) closer Landon Kruer received the loss after conceding a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Holtz began the game's scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning, knocking a triple to right field that sent Butler and Owen Walewander home. The Midshipmen responded in the top of the third, scoring two runs on a sac-fly from Tyler DePerno and an unearned run on an error. A bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth gave Navy a 3-2 lead, and after two more scoreless innings, Lehigh was suddenly down to their final six outs.
Trailing by one, Kohl connected on an RBI single to right center, scoring Robbie Carvelli to tie the game 3-3. Down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, Walewander sailed a fly ball to right field that sailed over the head of a confused Andrew Manning, allowing Dom Patrizi to come home and secure the weekend and season series win over Navy.
Walewander finished game one batting 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Patrizi, Butler, Carvelli, Kohl and Holtz also registered hits for Lehigh in game one.
Navy's Matt Archibald was excellent in game two, striking out seven batters while allowing only two hits and zero earned runs in 8.0 innings to earn the win. Kruer returned for the Mids in game two to collect his eighth save of the season. Hamilton started game two for the Mountain Hawks and was credited with the loss after allowing two runs in 4.0 innings.
Offense was hard to come by in game two thanks to superb pitching and a combined nine hits from both teams. Navy was able to take an early lead thanks to a DePerno RBI single in the first and Manning RBI single in the third inning.
After Hamilton left the game, first-year Max Treonze pitched well in his relief, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings. All the while, Lehigh's offense still struggled to generate offense with Archibald on the mound. The Mountain Hawks finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Patrizi. The Mountain Hawks had a chance to either tie or walk it off in the bottom of the ninth with runners on second and third, but Kruer struck out the final batter to seal the win for Navy.
Patrizi provided both of Lehigh's hits in game two.
The Mountain Hawks will play their final home game of the season on Tuesday, April 29 at 3 p.m. against Coppin State.
