Lehigh (22-21) and Coppin State (13-27) met earlier in the season in Baltimore on March 12, resulting in a 25-16 win for Lehigh. The two teams once again scored at high rate, this time combing for 45 total runs.
Reliever Tommy Lamar was credited with his second win of the season, tossing 2.1 innings while striking out one. Starting pitcher Jake Mulvehill struck out seven batters while allowing four earned runs in 4.0 innings of work. Coppin State reliever Isaiah Licorish took the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.
The offense came fast and furious for the Mountain Hawks, starting with a grand slam in the first inning from Justin Butler. Another run came across the plate thanks to an Ian Wirtz RBI groundout, making it 5-0 after one. However, the Eagles responded with a grand slam of their own in the top of the first.
Lehigh extended the lead in the second on a Raffaele Rogers RBI single and three-run homer to right field from Andrew Kohl. Three more runs scored in the fourth inning for Lehigh on a Butler RBI single and wild pitch, making the score 12-4 entering the fourth inning.
The Eagles had a massive top of the first inning, scoring nine runs in the frame to take the lead. Trailing 13-12, Kohl homered again in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up headed to the sixth. A solo shot by Noah Hogan put Coppin State up 14-13 after the top of the sixth inning.
After conceding a nine spot in the fifth, it was now Lehigh's turn to have a big inning. The Mountain Hawks put up ten runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Aidan Quinn.
Trailing by nine, the Eagles put two runs across the plate in the top of the seventh, cutting the deficit to seven. Needing three runs in the bottom of the frame the end it, the inning began for the Mountain hawks with a Butler RBI bunt single and bases loaded hit by pitch that set the score 25-16. With the bases loaded, Kohl delivered his third home run of the day and third Lehigh grand slam of the game to put an exclamation point on the team's home finale.
Kohl was spectacular at the plate, going 3-5 with a school record three home runs and school record nine RBIs. Butler also had a big day, batting 4-5 with seven RBIs, a triple and a home run. Jake Whitlinger, Jasper Adelman, Quinn, Rogers, Ryan Davis and Sam Holtz also recorded hits for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, April 30 at 3:30 p.m. for their final non-league game of the season at Saint Peter's.
