Lehigh Suffers Rivalry Loss to Lafayette

4/25/2025 9:52:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's lacrosse's 16-game winning streak against Lafayette was snapped Friday night as the Leopards claimed the regular season finale for both teams 12-7 Friday night in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute on Senior Night

at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks fell to 5-9 (4-4 PL) and the Leopards jumped to 9-4 (5-3 PL).

With the result, Lehigh will enter the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Colgate in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

Lafayette struck early, opening the scoring just 90 seconds into the game on a goal by Riley Sullivan. The Leopards would never surrender the lead. First-year Charlie Sherman briefly tied it up at 1-1 with a transition goal at the 9:55 mark of the first quarter, but Lafayette responded with a 4–0 run to take a 5–1 lead and never looked back.

At halftime, Lafayette held a 7–4 lead, with Lehigh getting within three on a goal from senior midfielder Dakota Eierman, assisted by Chris Rathwell (3A) with just four seconds left. Rathwell and junior attackman Andrew Kelly (3G) both finished with a team-high of three points.

For Lehigh, sophomore attackman Luke Winkler and Eierman both recorded two goals. Kelly scored early in the second half to bring Lehigh within two, but that was as close as the Mountain Hawks would get. The Leopards answered with their second 4–0 run of the game to push the lead to 11–5 with 8:14 left in regulation and Lehigh could never come back from the six-goal deficit.

Lafayette outshot Lehigh 37–29, while both teams were even with 30 ground balls apiece. Lehigh committed 20 turnovers to Lafayette's 16.

Junior defenseman Richard Checo led all players with five caused turnovers.

Lehigh won the faceoff battle, going 12-of-22. Senior faceoff specialist Sean Dow went 11-of-20 and picked up four ground balls, while sophomore Connor Riley added a 1-of-2 performance at the X.

In goal, Kasey Heath recorded six saves for Lehigh. Joe Doherty finished with eight saves for Lafayette.

Joshua Heaney led all players with a game-high four points for the Leopards.
