Mountain Hawks Defeat Army 8-6 On Quinn's Go-Ahead Homer

4/14/2025 5:07:00 PM | Baseball

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh baseball returned to Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field on Monday afternoon to conclude the season series with the Army West Point Black Knights. With the game tied in the top of the ninth inning, junior Aidan Quinn hit a two-run home run that gave the Mountain Hawks an 8-6 victory.

Cole Kochanowicz earned his fourth win of the season for Lehigh (17-17, 6-9 PL), throwing the final 3.1 innings of the game with two strikeouts and one run allowed. Robbie Penswick was credited with the loss for Army (16-18, 10-8 PL) after conceding the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.

Lehigh generated some offense right away, scoring a run on their second at bat thanks to a Raffaele Rogers RBI double. Rogers scored on a passed ball on the next play, putting the Mountain Hawks ahead 2-0 after the top of the first. A Jack Quinlan RBI single in the bottom of the first along with a Thomas Schreck score on a wild pitch in the second tied the game 2-2 through two.

Starting pitchers Cole Leaman and Bryce Brownlee worked well through the next few innings until a Chris Barr RBI double scored Colson Titus to put Army ahead. The Mountain Hawks were able to regain the lead the next inning thanks to two bases loaded walks.

The Black Knights pulled off a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to regain the lead. A William Parker RBI double tied the game before John McKillop's two RBI single allowed Army to lead 6-4 through six. However, their lead would not last long, as solo shots from both Jake Whitlinger and Quinn tied the game 6-6.

Lehigh and Army entered the ninth inning still tied at 6-6. Whitlinger got on base to start the inning with a hit by pitch before a sac-bunt by Rogers advanced him to second. Quinn then connected on his second homer of the afternoon, skying the ball over the left field wall to put Lehigh ahead 8-6. Kochanowicz retired the Black Knights in four batters in the bottom of the ninth to secure a crucial Patriot League win for the Mountain Hawks.

Whitlinger, Rogers, Quinn, and Ryan Davis provided the hits for Lehigh on Monday. In addition to Kochanowicz and Leaman, Noah Gyauch-Quirk threw 2.0 innings for the Mountain Hawks.

The Mountain Hawks will conclude the season series against rival Lafayette on Wednesday, April 16 at 3 p.m. in Easton.
