BALTIMORE – Lehigh baseball wrapped up its weekend series against the UMBC Retrievers on Sunday afternoon after splitting the first two games on Friday and Saturday. The Mountain Hawks put up four runs in the first and held on to win 6-2.
"The goal each weekend is to win the series and we were able to accomplish that the past two weekends," said head coach Sean Leary. "Our pitching was strong all weekend and gave us the opportunity to win each game."
David Andolina was spectacular in his start for Lehigh (5-5), striking out seven while allowing one run in 4.1 innings. Reliever Tommy Lamar received the win for Lehigh after tossing 1.1 innings of relief. First-year Noah Gyauch-Quirk struck out five batters in 2.0 innings of relief while Julio Ermigiotti closed out the game for the Mountain Hawks. UMBC (2-8) starter Sergio Droz was credited with the loss.
After the Mountain Hawks put up four runs in the top of the first on Saturday, the team matched that output on Sunday. Jake Whitlinger scored on an error for the first run of the game followed by an Aidan Quinn RBI groundout to set the score at 2-0. Owen Walewander then smashed a two-run shot to left field to put the Mountain Hawks ahead by four.
The Mountain Hawks kept the Retrievers off the board for the next four innings thanks to a great outing from Andolina. The junior remained on the mound until the bottom of the fifth when UMBC got two aboard with a hit and walk. The Retrievers took advantage of their runners on base with an RBI double from Danny Orr to give UMBC their first run of the game.
The following inning, Danny Wyatt scored Jesiah Carpenter on an RBI single to cut the Mountain Hawk lead in half. The Mountain Hawks went to the eighth inning leading by two, where they found some additional insurance runs. Sam Holtz gave Lehigh its fifth run of the day on a sac-fly followed by a Whitlinger RBI single to make it 6-2. The Mountain Hawks held the Retrievers scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the victory and weekend series win.
Five Mountain Hawks recorded hits in Sunday's win, including two-hit performances from Whitlinger, Dom Patrizi and Walewander. Ryan Cochran and Trystan Crawford also got on base via hit for Lehigh.
"Wales was outstanding all around as was Whitlinger," said Leary. "Our offense is definitely improving and I like where coach [Casey Rother] has them right now."
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Tuesday, March 11 for a midweek clash with the Saint Joseph's Hawks in Philadelphia.
