Mountain Hawks Cruise To 12-2 Win Over Saint Joseph's

3/11/2025 6:50:00 PM | Baseball

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh baseball traveled south to take on commonwealth foe Saint Joseph's on Tuesday afternoon for a midweek clash. The Mountain Hawks used nine hits to defeat the Hawks 12-2 for the team's sixth win of the season.

Sophomore Grady Golier started on the mound for Lehigh (6-5), striking out two while allowing no runs in 2.0 innings to earn his second win of the season. First-year Cole Kochanowicz earned the save after striking out five batters in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief. Saint Joseph's (5-10) starter Matt Fitzgibbon was credited with the loss after allowing four hits and four earned runs throughout 3.0 innings of work.

The game's first run came in the third inning, which began with reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Jake Whitlinger reaching on a hit by pitch. Dom Patrizi got aboard via walk followed by a Ryan Cochran single that loaded the bases. Junior Aidan Quinn then connected on a double to left center that sent both Whitlinger and Patrizi past home plate. Justin Butler sent another run home on an RBI groundout followed by an Ian Wirtz RBI single that set the score at 4-0.

Lehigh offense continued to surge in the fourth, kickstarted by a Whitlinger double to open the top of the frame. Cochran then reached on a fielding error, allowing Whitlinger to score. Quinn then tripled to center field to score Cochran and put himself in prime scoring position. In the next at bat, Butler homered to right field, and suddenly the Mountain Hawks led 8-0.

After conceding eight runs in two innings, the Hawks got themselves on the board in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Sam Meyer solo home run. Saint Joseph's got another run back the following inning off of a wild pitch, making the score 8-2 Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, allowing them to score another run when Bobby Kleckner was hit by a pitch. The score remained 9-2 until the top of the ninth when Lehigh again threatened late. With the bases loaded, Patrizi scored on a fielder's choice. Two at-bats later, Raffaele Rogers received an RBI after being hit by a pitch. A bases loaded walk for Kleckner put the Mountain Hawks up by ten runs, effectively ending the game.

Six Mountain Hawks got hits in Tuesday's win, including two-hit performances from Cochran, Quinn and Rogers. Butler's home run in the fourth inning was the 27th of his career, setting him six back of breaking Lehigh's all-time record.

In addition to Golier and Kochanowicz, first-year Jake Mulvehill also pitched for the Mountain Hawks. Mulvehill struck out one while allowing three hits in 4.0 full innings.

The Mountain Hawks will play on consecutive days, heading south to Baltimore to take on Coppin State University on Wednesday, March 12 at 3 p.m.
