Lehigh Outlasts Coppin State In 25-16 Shootout
3/12/2025 8:49:00 PM | Baseball
Lehigh (7-5) employed ten pitchers in the game, with the win being awarded to sophomore Liam O'Hearen who struck out five in 2.0 innings. Coppin State's (4-10) Park Roeder was attributed with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Junior David Andolina picked up his first save of the season with four strikeouts in 2.0 innings of relief.
Offense came early and often for Lehigh, who scored in each of the first three innings. Owen Walewander got things started with an RBI single followed by an Edwin Betances RBI single, bases loaded hit by pitch and bases loaded walk. Dom Patrizi scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second, setting the score at 5-0 through two. In the third, RBI doubles from Ryan Davis and Patrizi put the Mountain Hawks up 8-0 before a three-run home run from Aidan Quinn broke the game open at 11-0. An RBI groundout from Trystan Crawford put Lehigh ahead by twelve at the end of three.
The Eagles generated some offense of their own in the bottom of the fourth, kickstarted by a bases loaded walk. A Gavin Grutzmacher two-RBI double and score on a wild pitch finished a four-run fourth for Coppin State. In the top of the fifth, Crawford scored Walewander with a pop-fly and Patrizi scored Sam Holtz on an RBI groundout the following inning to put the lead back up to ten.
Six outs away from a run rule trailing by ten, Coppin State made this a ball game in the sixth. Three hits, three bases loaded walks and a bases loaded hit by pitch added eight runs in the frame for the Eagles. All of a sudden, Coppin State only trailed by two runs.
After keeping the Mountain Hawks at bay in the top of the seventh, the Eagles successfully tied the game in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-RBI ground rule double to set the score at 14-14.
The Mountain Hawks jumped ahead in the top of the eighth thanks to a Quinn RBI double, a lead they would hold for good. However, Lehigh was not done scoring. The Mountain Hawks put up ten runs in the top of the ninth in an inning that included RBIs, bases loaded walks, passed balls and errors. The Eagles got two runs back in the bottom of the ninth, but the damage had already been done.
Lehigh's 25 runs are the most the team has scored in a game since a 27-2 win over Saint Peter's in 2018. Six Mountain Hawks recorded hits on the day, including multi-hit performances from Patrizi, Quinn, Walewander and Betances. Patrizi hit 3-7 with five RBIs and two doubles while Walewander hit 3-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Quinn finished the day with four RBIs.
The Mountain Hawks will welcome UAlbany to J. David Walker Field for a four-game series from Friday, March 14 through Sunday, March 16.
