BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball kicked off a four-game home series against the UAlbany Great Danes on Friday afternoon. UAlbany's starter tossed eight full innings to help the Great Danes defeat the Mountain Hawks 6-2.
Picking up the win for UAlbany (6-6) was starter Dylan Banner, who impressed with two strikeouts, no walks and two runs conceded in a full 8.0 innings of work. Lehigh (7-6) starter Marcus Danchision was credited with the loss after allowing five runs and six hits in 3.2 innings.
Danchision had an excellent start in the first inning, striking out two batters to keep the Great Danes off the board. However, Banner retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame, which allowed the Great Danes to take the lead in the second off of a Luke Filippi RBI.
With two outs on the board in the bottom of the second, Edwin Betances singled to give Lehigh its first base runner of the game. Justin Butler doubled off the centerfield wall in the following at bat, sending Betances home to tie the game.
The Great Danes regained control in the third, kickstarted by two hit by pitches and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Logan Morris gave UAlbany the lead with an RBI single while Jared Toby and Filippi added onto the lead with RBIs of their own. The Mountain Hawks trailed 5-1 at the end of three.
The game remained scoreless for the next four innings, much in part to excellence on the mound from Banner. While Banner didn't record any strikeouts in this time, he was effective and managed to retire Lehigh batters without throwing an exorbitant number of pitches. On the Lehigh side, Julio Ermigiotti was solid in relief, allowing only two hits while striking out three batters in 3.2 innings.
Lehigh's offense finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth when a Dom Patrizi RBI groundout gave the Mountain Hawks their second run of the day. The Great Danes added an insurance run off a Ryan Ferremi RBI single in the top of the ninth to extend their lead back up to four. Reliever Alex Enea took to the mound for the Great Danes in the bottom of the ninth and recorded the final three outs to seal the win for UAlbany.
Six Mountain Hawks recorded hits for Lehigh, including a two-hit day from Jake Whitlinger. Aidan Quinn, Owen Walewander, Betances, Butler and Jack Frankovic also got hits for the Mountain Hawks. In addition to Danchision and Ermigiotti, Grady Golier and Max Treonze appeared on the mound for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field on Saturday, March 15 at 12 p.m. for a doubleheader against the Great Danes.
