BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball returned to J. David Walker Field on Saturday for a doubleheader against the UAlbany Great Danes. The Mountain Hawks won a seven-inning game one 3-2 and defeated the Great Danes 7-6 in game two.
Picking up the win in game one for Lehigh (9-6) was senior Jack Hamilton after he pitched 2.0 innings of relief of starter Cole Leaman. Receiving the loss for UAlbany was starter Tyler Kneller, who allowed three runs and four hits in 5.0 innings.
The Mountain Hawks opened the day's scoring in the bottom of the first off of a Ryan Cochran RBI groundout that sent Jake Whitlinger past home plate. The score remained the same until the fourth inning, much in part to solid pitching from both Leaman and Kneller.
The Great Danes got their offense going in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with one out thanks to two walks and an error. Luke Myers then lined out to left field, which allowed the tying run to score. The next at bat, Victor Mazzara reached on a fielder's choice while Michael Maggio scored on an error to put UAlbany in front 2-1.
Lehigh responded in the bottom of the frame when Raffaele Rogers reached on a fielder's choice that scored Owen Walewander. In the bottom of the fifth, Aidan Quinn got aboard with a single and advanced to second on an error, which sent Whitlinger home for the go-ahead run. Hamilton then entered the game on the mound for the final two innings, keeping the lid shut on the Great Danes to secure the game one win.
Lehigh registered five hits on the day from four players, highlighted by a 2-3 performance from Quinn. Whitlinger, Walewander and Rogers also got hits for Lehigh.
Earning the win in game two was first-year Cole Kochanowicz, who struck out three while allowing only one hit and zero runs in 3.0 innings. UAlbany reliever Thomas Quinn picked up the loss after he allowed four runs on four hits, three walks and three hit by pitches in 0.1 innings.
There was much more offense in game two, as Lehigh and UAlbany combined for 16 hits and 13 runs. Quinn got the scoring started for Lehigh in the bottom of the first on an RBI single that scored Whitlinger and Dom Patrizi to make it 2-0. The Great Danes responded in the top of the second with two runs of their own on a wild pitch and RBI single by Mazzara.
First-year Jake Mulvehill entered the game for starter David Andolina in the top of the fourth, inheriting a one-runner no outs situation. Mazzara singled once again to put the Great Danes on top before Luke Filippi connected on a two-run homer, and suddenly Lehigh trailed 5-2. Cooper Loyal extended that lead by one the following inning with an RBI single to right center. Trailing by four, Whitlinger kicked off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run, his third of the season.
The Mountain Hawks continued to trail 6-3 until the bottom of the eighth inning. UAlbany's Quinn entered the game for starter Mark Gajowski, who impressed through 7.0 full innings. Lehigh quickly loaded the bases, which allowed a hit by pitch and walk to bring Lehigh within one run. Another bases loaded hit by pitch on Rogers tied the game 6-6. Down to their last out in the eighth, Whitlinger singled to left field, allowing the go-ahead run to cross the plate. Kochanowicz closed the door on the Great Danes in the top of the ninth to seal the doubleheader sweep for Lehigh.
Lehigh's seven hits came from four players, including monster game from Whitlinger. The senior went 3-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run. Whitlinger stole three bases between both games as well, putting him only ten away from becoming Lehigh's all-time leader in stolen bases. Quinn recorded another two-hit day for the Mountain Hawks in game two.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude their series with the Great Danes on Sunday, March 16 at 10:30 a.m. The game was moved up due to forecasted inclement weather.
