Lehigh Wins Series Over UAlbany In 6-4 Victory

3/16/2025 2:49:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball wrapped up its weekend series against the UAlbany Great Danes on Sunday morning at J. David Walker Field. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Great Danes by a score of 6-4 to pick up a 3-1 series win.

Earning the win in his first career start for Lehigh (10-6) was sophomore Liam O'Hearen. The right-hander tossed 4.0 innings with three strikeouts, three hits and no runs allowed. UAlbany (6-9) starter Ryan Pittz was credited with the loss after conceding three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings.

"O'Hearen was the story today," said head coach Sean Leary. "He stepped up on Wednesday for some key relief and then grabbed the ball on short rest today and gave us four shutout innings. He showed the grittiness we'll need to win key Patriot League games."

Lehigh's offense got going early in the game, as two runs came across home plate in the bottom of the first. Ryan Cochran doubled home Dom Patrizi to get things started, then Jake Whitlinger singled home Cochran to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 2-0.

The Mountain Hawks maintained a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning. Raffaele Rogers started the inning with a double to left center, and another double from Jack Frankovic drove him home. The combination of O'Hearen and Max Treonze on the mound kept the Great Danes scoreless throughout the middle innings, allowing more Lehigh runs to come aboard in the sixth. An Aidan Quinn double and Edwin Betances two-RBI double put Lehigh up 6-0 through seven innings.

UAlbany finally got on the board in the top of the eighth when Louis Kaleb's RBI single scored Logan Morris. The Great Danes began to threaten in the top of the ninth, scoring runs on three-consecutive at bats to pull within two. However, reliever Tommy Lamar struck out Aaron Herbst swinging to record the final out of the game.

The Mountain Hawks recorded 12 hits from eight different players in Sunday's win. Cochran had a great outing, batting 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Owen Walewander and Rogers also recorded multi-hit days for Lehigh, as both student athletes tallied two hits.

"Our offense continues to find different ways to win and has different guys stepping up," said Leary. "Cochran, AQ, Wales, Frankovic and Betances all had key hits today. Yesterday, it was Whitlinger and others."

The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field on Wednesday, March 19 at 3 p.m. to take on the Penn Quakers.

"Winning a third-straight series is a positive sign as we head into the Patriot League season," said Leary.
