LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Lehigh baseball competed in round one of the Liberty Bell Classic against the Rider University Broncs on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks fell by a score of 8-5 and will now play in a consolation bout next Tuesday.
Rider (13-7) relief pitcher Gavin Hawkes earned the win after allowing zero runs with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings pitched. Lehigh (11-11) first-year Cole Kochanowicz was credited with the loss after conceding Rider's go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
After retiring the Mountain Hawks in order to start the game, the Broncs took an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first off of a bases loaded walk. Lehigh tied the game up the next half inning on a Trystan Crawford RBI single and then gained a 2-1 lead in the top of the third off an Aidan Quinn sac-fly. A Richie Sica sac-fly and a wild pitch allowed Rider to lead 3-2 through three.
The lead would flip once again in the top of the fourth for the Mountain Hawks. Ian Wirtz singled home Edwin Betances followed by a Jake Whitlinger RBI single to put Lehigh ahead 4-3.
The Broncs offense broke through in the bottom of the fourth, sending five runs across the plate. Kyle Neri got things started for Rider with a two-run homer to left field that gave the Broncs a 5-4 advantage. A Sica two-RBI double and Matt Leahy RBI single gave the Broncs a four-run lead.
Neither side mustered much offense in the late innings, with the exception of two runners being stranded for Lehigh in the top of the eighth. Down to their final three outs, the Mountain Hawks threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with only one out. A run came across the plate for Lehigh via a bases loaded hit by pitch, but ultimately the Broncs came away with an 8-5 victory to advance in the Liberty Bell Classic tournament.
Seven Mountain Hawks recorded hits in Tuesday's loss, including two-hit performances from Dom Patrizi, Crawford and Wirtz. Whitlinger, Quinn, Raffaele Rogers and Sam Holtz also tallied hits for Lehigh. Jack Hamilton, David Andolina, Jake Mulvehill and Max Treonze also got into the game on the mound for the Mountain Hawks.
The Mountain Hawks next welcome Lafayette to J. David Walker Field on Friday, March 28 for The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
