BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball kicked off its weekend series against Lafayette on Friday afternoon in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. With the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning, sophomore Raffaele Rogers connected on a go-ahead two-run homer that gave the Mountain Hawks the win.

Sophomore Julio Ermigiotti started on the mound for Lehigh (12-11, 2-3 PL), but senior Marcus Danchision earned the win after pitching 5.0 scoreless innings of relief. Lafayette (4-21, 1-4 PL) starter Joe Skapinetz played well, striking out eight in 6.0 innings. The loss was credited to reliever Owen Basso who conceded the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Leopards offense got going early, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Matt Colella's sac-fly got things started and Easton Brenner scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Lafayette. The Mountain Hawks responded in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a Ryan Cochran two-RBI double to right field, and quickly the game was tied 2-2 through one.
Lafayette tacked on another run in the second on an Alex Barrist RBI double that put them ahead 3-2. Lafayette maintained the lead until the bottom of the third when Aidan Quinn's RBI single tied the game 3-3. Despite both teams getting hits and leaving runners on base, the score remained tied for the next four innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Mountain Hawks faced some adversity. Lafayette loaded the bases with only one out on the board, putting Danchision in a difficult situation. The senior right hander struck out Teddy Cashman and forced a flyout to left field to escape the jam. In the bottom of the frame, Rogers faced a 3-2 count with two outs on the board. The sophomore knocked the ball just over the left field wall, giving the Mountain Hawks the lead. Danchision retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
Jake Whitlinger, Dom Patrizi, Cochran, Quinn, Walewander, and Rogers all recorded hits for Lehigh. Both Cochran and Rogers tallied two RBIs on the day. On the mound, Ermigiotti struck out four while Danchision registered five strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field on Saturday, March 29 for a doubleheader against Lafayette starting at 12 p.m.
