Mountain Hawks Drop Rivalry Doubleheader To Lafayette

3/29/2025 6:14:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball squared off against the Lafayette Leopards for a doubleheader on Saturday in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. The Mountain Hawks dropped an 8-1 decision in a seven-inning game one and a 3-1 decision in a seven-inning game two.

Lafayette (6-21, 3-4 PL) starter Trace Florio picked up his first win of the season in game one, tossing a complete 7.0 inning game with five strikeouts and four hits. Lehigh (12-13, 2-4 PL) starter Cole Leaman was credited with the loss after allowing the go-ahead runs in the top of the first inning.

Lafayette's offense scored early and often, starting with a two-RBI single from Matt Colella in the top of the first. The Leopards extended their lead to five in the top of the second on a Bode Grieve solo home run and a Michael Zarillo two-RBI double to left field. Jack Mislan scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 6-0 Lafayette through three.

Jake Mulvehill replaced Leaman on the mound in the top of the fourth. Inheriting two runners on base with no outs, Mulvehill walked the bases loaded and conceded an RBI groundout that put the Leopards ahead 8-0. The Mountain Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a sac-bunt from Owen Walewander. However, neither team scored the rest of the way and the Leopards won 8-1.

Ryan Cochran, Aidan Quinn, Raffaele Rogers and Robbie Carvelli recorded hits in game one. Max Treonze also appeared on the mound for Lehigh in game one.

Lafayette starter Tristan Helmick earned the win in game two, striking out five while allowing seven hits in 6.0 full innings. Lehigh starter Liam O'Hearen was given the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. Mike Romano picked up the save for the Leopards.

Both pitchers worked well through the first two innings, only allowing one hit between the two of them. The Mountain Hawks took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the third when Quinn doubled home Cochran to take a 1-0 lead. The Leopards quickly responded in the top of the fourth on a bunt from Easton Brenner.

The Leopards went in front in the top of the fifth when Grieve scampered home on a wild pitch. Lafayette extended that lead to two in the sixth inning on a Mislan RBI single to score Brenner. The Mountain Hawks couldn't muster any runs in the sixth or seventh, resulting in a doubleheader sweep for the Leopards.

Dom Patrizi, Cochran, Quinn and Trystan Crawford got hits for the Mountain Hawks. Jack Hamilton pitched the final inning for Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field tomorrow at 12 p.m. to conclude the weekend series against the Leopards.
