BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball concluded its weekend series against Lafayette on Sunday from J. David Walker Field in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. The Mountain Hawks jumped on the Leopards early and never looked back, winning decisively 8-1.
"The team needed a response today, and we got it," said head coach Sean Leary. "We definitely had some step-up performances."
First-year Noah Gyauch-Quirk made his first career start for Lehigh (13-13, 3-5 PL), striking out three while allowing only one run in 3.0 innings. David Andolina received the win after tossing 5.0 scoreless innings of relief while Marcus Danchision closed out the game in the top of the ninth. Lafayette (6-22, 3-5 PL) starter Trey Zaffiro was credited with the loss after conceding four earned runs.
"Andolina really had a strong outing that was bookended by both GQ and Danch," said Leary.
Lehigh's offense got going early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Jake Whitlinger singled in his first at bat and Ryan Cochran got aboard via a hit by pitch in the next at bat. Aidan Quinn then singled Whitlinger home for the first run. Owen Walewander laid down a sac-bunt that scored Cochran followed by a Trystan Crawford sac-fly to make it 3-0 Mountain Hawks.
Ryan Davis helped extend the Lehigh lead to four in the bottom of the second when he doubled home Dom Patrizi. The Leopards scored their lone run of the game in the top of the third when Luke Caucci homered to left field, making the score 4-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Davis doubled once again, sending Justin Butler home to put the Mountian Hawks back up by four.
The score remained intact for the next three innings thanks to solid pitching on both sides. Lehigh broke through once again in the seventh, scoring three runs on RBIs from Crawford and Patrizi as well as a bases loaded walk. The score remained 8-1 until the top of the ninth inning, when Danchision inherited a bases loaded with no outs situation. The senior right hander forced a pop-up and struck out the final two batters to seal the victory.
Whitlinger, Quinn, Walewander, Crawford, Butler and Davis tallied hits for the Mountain Hawks. Whitlinger, Quinn and Davis each had two hits.
"On offense, it was encouraging to see us play small ball to get out to an early lead," said Leary. "RD and Crawford came through with some clutch RBI at bats."
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 1 to take on Delaware State in the consolation round of the Liberty Bell Classic. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Dover.
