Lehigh's 36 runs are the most in a single game in program history dating back to 1970. The team's previous high came in a 28-3 win over Moravian in 2006.
First-year Cole Kochanowicz picked up the win for Lehigh (14-13), tossing 3.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his first career start. The loss was attributed to starter Drew Brady for Delaware State (3-20) after he conceded eight runs in the first inning.
The Mountain Hawks set the tone early, scoring eight runs in the first inning. Lehigh scored in a variety of ways, including a sac-fly, wild pitch, error, and a passed ball. First-year Ian Wirtz provided a two-RBI single as well in the first.
Five more runs came across the plate in the second, highlighted by a bases-clearing RBI double for junior Aidan Quinn. The third inning provided even more fireworks, as Lehigh put up seven more runs. Junior Ryan Davis tallied his third RBI double in two games and sophomore Raffaele Rogers connected on a three-run homer to left field to put the Mountain Hawks up 20-0 through three.
Senior Jake Whitlinger hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning, sending himself and Davis past home plate. In the fifth, senior Sam Holtz homered to lead off the inning. Later in the fifth with two outs on the board and the bases loaded, first-year Cadeyrn Ahearn delivered a grand slam to left field, setting the score at 31-1 through five innings.
The Mountain Hawks would add an additional five runs before the game was called at the conclusion of the bottom of the seventh.
Lehigh tallied 17 hits on the day from 11 different players. Whitlinger, Rogers, Quinn and Butler all had multi-hit days for the Mountain Hawks. Both Rogers and Ahearn recorded a team-high five RBIs while Quinn went 4-5 with four RBIs on the day. Grady Golier, Tommy Lamar and Max Treonze also saw action on the mound for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will return to Patriot League play on Saturday, April 5 for a doubleheader against the Bucknell Bison. Game one is slated to begin at 12 p.m. in Lewisburg.
